Photo of the Week: Pier Discoveries

Birch Aquarium education instructor Elyse Goin shows students how samples are collected from the end of Scripps Pier to measure the temperature and salinity of the ocean water in La Jolla Cove.

This Beach Science program funded by Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund brought 1,655 students from underserved communities around San Diego to the beach to learn about marine research this year.

The water sampling program is part of the Scripps Oceanography Shore Stations Program, which has been collecting measurements at the spot since 1916, creating one of the world's longest ocean time series. Photo: Birch Aquarium at Scripps
