Renowned Scripps Oceanography climate and atmospheric scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan (second row, fourth from right) was among luminaries in the arts and sciences recognized June 21 during the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Awards presented by the BBVA Foundation in Madrid, Spain. The foundation honored Ramanathan for discovering that human-produced gases and pollutants other than CO2 have a huge power to alter the Earth’s climate, and that by acting on them it is possible to make a short-term dent on the rate of global warming.
