Scripps Oceanography marine biologist Dan Cartamil holds a freshly tagged soupfin shark about to be released back into the ocean off Santa Rosa Island.
Cartamil and fellow shark expert Andrew Nosal tagged 25 soupfin sharks near California's Northern Channel Islands in early July to help track where and when they migrate. This project was an extension of research they began in La Jolla in 2013, where they tagged adult female soupfin sharks, more than half of which were later found in the Northern Channel Islands.
The work is funded by the Moore Family Foundation.
Keep an eye out for more shark stories when Scripps Oceanography celebrates Shark Week, which begins July 28.
