UC San Diego photographer Erik Jepsen captured these images of Wednesday's Super Blue Blood Moon at Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier.

The January 31, 2018 event was a “super moon,” when the Moon is closest to Earth in its orbit; a "blue moon," because it was the second full moon of the month; and a "blood moon" because while the Moon was in the Earth’s shadow it took on a reddish tint.
