Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego postdoctoral researcher Yassir Eddebbar speaks at a Dec. 7 panel discussion at the international climate talks known this year as COP24. Eddebbar, a member of the Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation at Scripps, and other panelists spoke on how action on sustainability goals can be scaled to up to include several countries through cooperation on ocean policies.
Ocean observations are crucial for agencies to implement policies and adaptation should be science-based, Eddebbar said at one of several COP24 events in which students and scientists from Scripps are taking part.
The 23 delegates from Scripps join nearly a dozen other researchers from the University of California to explore various climate policy topics at the two-week event in Katowice, Poland as part of the UC Revelle observer organization.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for global science research and education in the world. Now in its second century of discovery, the scientific scope of the institution has grown to include biological, physical, chemical, geological, geophysical, and atmospheric studies of the earth as a system. Hundreds of research programs covering a wide range of scientific areas are under way today on every continent and in every ocean. The institution has a staff of more than 1,400 and annual expenditures of approximately $195 million from federal, state, and private sources. Scripps operates oceanographic research vessels recognized worldwide for their outstanding capabilities.
