A tanker refuels Scripps Oceanography research vessel Roger Revelle at sea off Thailand in this photo taken by Scripps graduate student James Holmes.
Holmes is a member of a student-led expedition to study seafloor topography being documented by fellow graduate student John DeSanto on The Glamorous Life of a Geophysicist, where DeSanto has posted additional photos of the expedition and of the refueling operation by Capt. David Murline.
"As an aside, James and I swear we heard a rooster crow from the tanker when we took the picture above," DeSanto writes. "Sadly, we were not able to capture it on film. Perhaps our compatriots will be having a particularly fresh meal in the near future?"
The expedition is supported by the UC Ship Funds Program, which provides more than $1 million per year to enable graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and early career faculty to pursue independent research and instruction at sea aboard Scripps ships.
