Scripps Director Receives NOAA Award

Tony Haymet, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, received an award of appreciation from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At an Oct. 14 ceremony, Tim Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for NOAA, presented Haymet with the award for his support of NOAA's science and stewardship.

According to Keeney, since becoming director of Scripps just over a year ago, Haymet has shown a strong commitment to broadening the scope of Scripps's mission and deepening partnerships, including the institution's support of NOAA's Fisheries Service, co-located on the Scripps campus.

"We applaud Tony's efforts to address issues of global climate change and impacts on society, to offer Scripps as a resource for policy makers, and to strengthen graduate, undergraduate, and post-graduate training," said Keeney. "We share Tony's pride in the great number of Scripps students who have received their education and training from both our institutions and who will become the next generation of leaders in ocean and atmospheric science."

"I am honored to accept this award from NOAA and its Fisheries Service on behalf of my predecessors and Scripps scientists who have worked closely with NOAA scientists," said Haymet. "We are proud to be affiliated with NOAA Fisheries Service and I look forward to continuing our close collaborations in support of advancing fisheries, ocean observing, earth, and climate science."
