Photo of the Week: In the Land of Ice

Researchers cast a CTD rosette that gathers data on seawater conductivity and temperature at specified depths off the coast of Greenland on a transit to Iceland.  Scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego were part of the multiyear Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP). During OSNAP, scientists from several academic centers deployed a series of moorings to make detailed measurements of currents and eddies to better understand the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), a main mover of heat energy between tropical and subpolar latitudes. Scripps postdoctoral researcher Isabela Le Bras was among the scientists who returned to the region in a cruise led by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to collect moorings originally deployed in 2016. Scripps' Fiametta Straneo is among OSNAP's principal investigators.
