Probing the skies while studying ocean processes off Southern California

U.S. Navy Lt. Anna Hook releases a sensor package on a weather balloon from the deck of Scripps Oceanography research vessel Sally Ride in October. The photo was taken by U.S. Air Force Major Ben Wauer.

The release was part of the Couple Air Sea Processes and Electromagnetic ducting Research (CASPER) initiative, which was conducting a month-long Office of Naval Research-sponsored cruise to survey atmospheric and upper ocean conditions in the upwelling region off Southern California. Naval Postgraduate School professor of meteorology Qing Wang was principal investigator for the project.

Lt. Hook, a student at NPS, is researching the environmental effects that impact optical turbulence with the ultimate goal of improving models that predict laser propagation.
