Revelle Family Student Center (Surfside)
Rules and Regulations
Surfside is intended for the sole use of the Scripps graduate student community and is scheduled and managed by the SIO Department Office. The following regulations cover reservation, approval, and event management of the space. Use of the space is contingent on acknowledging, understanding, and agreeing to abide by these regulations.
RESERVATIONS
1) All events must be approved by the SIO Department Manager.
2) Some events may also need to be approved by the Scripps Forum Manager, and may need to be altered to work with events scheduled at the Forum.
3) All Surfside events must have a current Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) graduate student as the primary contact. Non-student reservations are not being accepted at this time.
4) Non-exclusive short-term use of Surfside (studying, playing the piano, etc.) does not require a reservation for current SIO graduate students, subject to availability of the space.
ALCOHOL
1) Alcohol permits are required for almost all events where alcohol will be consumed (see below for exceptions). Most events also now require that alcohol be served by a licensed professional bartender, and event sponsors must purchase liability insurance. Please review UCSD's alcohol policies HERE before requesting a permit.
2) Alcohol permit requests must be submitted at least three weeks in advance of the event date; permits can be requested through this FORM
Be sure to list Denise Darling (ddarling@ucsd.edu) as the facility manager on the alcohol permit request form.
3) You will receive notification from the university if your alcohol permit request is granted. You *must* forward your approved permit to SurfsideReservations@sio.ucsd.edu to be authorized to serve alcohol at Surfside.
4) You may hold a small function where alcohol is served without an alcohol permit if certain conditions are met. The event must be held in a private space, all attendees must be 21 or older, all must be university employees, and a director-level staff member or faculty member must be present. This means that you could, for example, have a champagne toast for a recent graduate together with members of their lab, provided student attendees are formally employed in the lab. For such events you do not need a licensed professional bartender, though it's still recommended that you have one. All other events, including those with family members present who are not employed by UCSD, must secure an alcohol permit, have a licensed professional bartender, purchase liability insurance, and follow all other regulations for events with alcohol.
KEYS
Your SIO student ID card serves as your key to Surfside. Please check a few days in advance of your event to ensure your ID card is working properly to open the door. If it does not work, please contact SurfsideReservations@sio.ucsd.edu for assistance. Do not wait until the last minute to do this.
