Outreach
Part of Scripps Oceanography's mission is to communicate to the public what our researchers learn about the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment. We reach out to the community in a number of ways:
- Our public exploration center, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, showcases our research and more than 60 marine habitats, provides programs for local schools and visiting students, and offers monthly Perspectives on Ocean Science lectures.
- Monthly one-hour tours provide visitors with an overview of our campus and our research.
- Volunteers with student-led Scripps Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) connect community groups and schools with speakers.
- Scripps Educational Alliances (SEA) works closely with Scripps scientists to facilitate their participation in a wide array of science education and outreach programs and activities, often as a way to satisfy the “broader impacts” requirement of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
