Application Instructions

Deadlines:   Candidate application materials including a current CV, summary of doctoral dissertation, statement of research, mentor support letter, and two confidential letters of recommendation are due by October 30, 2023. 

Eligibility:  To be eligible for this award you must have received a PhD degree in ocean, earth or atmospheric sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, environmental policy or a related field conferred by November 30, 2024. Candidates are required to have no more than 3 years postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. The intention of this program is to expose early career postdocs to new research opportunities and the facilities available at SIO/UCSD.

Applicants are required to collaborate with at least one Scripps mentor (and no more than three mentors).  Prior to submitting your application, you must contact members of the Scripps research staff working in your area of interest to initiate a potential collaboration.  In order for your application to receive full consideration, the potential SIO mentor(s) must provide you a letter of support to include with your application materials. 

You are responsible for ensuring that referees are willing to provide reference letters.  You must request two confidential reference letters via the application system which will be solicited automatically - the letters must be submitted by the referee via the secure link provided.  Please make sure to request reference letters BEFORE the application due date, to ensure a complete application package (one week will be allowed after deadline for reference letters to arrive).

Reference letters (due 11/6/23):

Reference letters are a key factor in the decision process and should document:

  • Under what circumstances the referee has known you.
  • Your previous accomplishments and potential for conducting innovative research in your chosen field.
  • An overall evaluation of your past performance relative to other students at a comparable stage in their careers.

SIO Mentor letters:

Applicant will procure your letter which should address your willingness to serve as a mentor and also provide an assessment of the candidate's training, former work, and suitability for the proposed postdoctoral project.  It will also include information on access to any facilities which will be especially important to the planned research.
